Rosa Silver

These pieces, part of a 24-day art challenge by artist Rosa Silver for Murze Magazine.  The paintings are inspired by the photographs of Jewish artist Henryk Ross. As a prisoner in the Lodz ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland,

Ross was allowed to document his life and his images were used as part of Nazi propaganda. During this process, he was able to capture on film the pain and resilience of the Jewish people.

He buried the negatives of his work in the ghetto in order to ensure that there would be a “historical record of our martyrdom”.

Born and raised in Manhattan, Rosa has lived in Europe, Hawaii and for the past 9 years, the Pacific Northwest. She has both a BFA and MFA in metalsmithing, yet currently focuses on watercolors.  Her work has been shown extensively for years across the US and abroad, and included in several of the Portland Art Museum’s Monster Drawing Jams.  She volunteers at various Portland art organizations and is currently a DJ on Freeform Portland radio.
